Computer Chip to Bring 3D Holograms to Smartphones by 2015

The art of holography:

Holography is the art of creating 3D images on a 2D surface. Recently, the era of 3D has evolved at a great frequency. People are now coming towards the 3D zone where they get to see a clearer image of everything. Holography is thus rapidly seeing the peak of success. People prefer watching 3d images rather than 2D ones. Be it movies or mere images, 3D ones are far better than 2D ones. Each and every screen has to efficient enough to support a 3D image. Then why should smart phones be left behind?

Evolution of holography in smart phones:

Mobile phones were initially launched as a device that catered the concerns of people in calling and texting. A few years later, the term smart phone came into existence where it was virtually possible to access the entire world via internet and camera activities. Now one might wonder what kind of a smart phone is this going to be which would be able to create 3D images floating in thin air.

Holography in smart phones – a project of Ostendo:

Ostendo is quiet and well reputed firm based in California. Ostendo has currently been boasting about its latest project in which they claim to have built a small chip costing approximately $30. This chip will be the hologram projecting chip in smart phones which will be installed and ready to use in smart phones in 2015 and 2016. Basically Ostendo plans to launch two versions of these chips. The first version will comprise of showcasing 2D images whereas the second version will consist of the actual holography or 3D images. The purpose of these two versions is basically to check the success rate of these two projector chips by the customer’s response. Also the customers will be able to make a comparison on the utilization and application of the two projector chips.

Ostendo utilizes a new technology that they have created on their own by the name of Ostendo Quantum Photonic Imager. In this technology there is a wafer which comprises of light emitting diodes (LEDs) which have been miniaturized radically. There is an image processor which is connected to this wafer.  Although very small in size, this miniature chip is capable of producing 3D images on giant screens as well as on the screens of smart phones without the use of 3D glasses. All the brightness, color and image of each 3D image produced is controlled by this miniature chip. Each beam of light passing through the object is controlled by this miniature project across a million pixels. Ostendo believes that this chip set technology is also applicable on smart watches, tablets and televisions. In fact the team at Ostendo is willing to take another venture of holography on these projects. They are just waiting to launch these on the smart phones first so that they can gather the response of the customers and scrutinize the success rate of their pilot project in terms of holography.

Difference between Ostendo’s project and others

Although, this concept is not a new one because several companies have brought this forward by making holograms but with the help of large machines which have large mirrors fitted inside them. The phenomenon is done by the reflection of light. The main issue in this concept is to keep the angle accurate otherwise the beam of light might scatter in some different direction. Therefore, a small computer chip of enough size to be fitted in smartphones and can focus on keeping the angles of the beam of light much accurate. It can also control the color and brightness of the hologram in the smartphone.

According to Ostendo’s chief executive, “This chipset is capable of making holograms in smartphones but this technology will come up in a bit later, right now it has already made a huge difference in making the 2D pictures into 3D ones”. This computer chip has the tendency to make these pictures even brighter and colorful as compared to the previous technologies because this can spread onto the surface having 48 inches diagonal. This would cover up to one million pixels.

What 3D technology has brought for the people!

The interest of the people in 3D technology is increased when Amazon’s smartphone was launched having the capability of showing the 3D effects. But unlike Ostendo, Amazon’s phone was not that much able to produce 3D images. In the past, projectors were used to display the floating images with the help of mirrors but this computer chip believed to have such a unique size that it can be used in very small devices as well such as smart watches in near future. This Californian based company, Ostendo, has made it very easier for everyone to afford it as well in just 30$ to get this chipset.

The exact size of the chip is 0.5 cubic centimeter which is easy enough to be fitted in the smartphones. Dr. El-Ghoroury stated, “The Company needs to improve its 3D product and they are trying to make the pixels even smaller to achieve higher resolution than this”.

In the end, we will see the Ostendo’s chips in every electronic device either it is a glasses free 3D television set or a smart watch and even tablets which are capable of producing holograms. What would it be like if everything was coming to you in 3D like you are shopping, playing games and everything else? This computer chip will enhance the relationship between people and technology at its higher level and increases the business opportunity in many sectors as well. This thing will give a tough time to the iPhone technology in the coming days very soon! People should be ready to face this change as it is just a matter of time.
