Apple Launches iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

Apple had a big day on Spe9 when it unveiled two new iPhones - iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Also a long rumored Apple Watch was also detailed. As expected and rumored, Apple also shared the date of availability of the upcoming iOS 8 - September 17.

iPhone 6: is the best choice for travellers?

With pre-orders starting this Friday, September 12, the iPhone 6 will be available in 16 GB, 64 GB, and 128 GB variants for $199, $299, and $399, while the iPhone 6 Plus will be available in the same storage capacities for $299, $399, and $499, respectively.

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are Apple's latest efforts in the profitable product line . On the event of this great and remarkable launch, Tim Cook, CEO of Apple stated that he expects Android users to look at switching to the iPhone, claiming that the phones are "appreciably better in every single way".

The iOS 8 has been pre-installed on the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, while the update is compatible to iPhones ranging from iPhone 4S to iPhone 5S, to iPod touch 5th generation and to the iPads from iPad 2 to iPad Air, including both minis.

OS and Processor

Inside, the new iOS 8 models will sport the faster A8 processor with two billion transistors, a revamped 8Mp 1080p camera with image stabilization, and a host of new imaging and video software tools.

Both new iPhones come with a new A8 chipset with M8 motion co-processor and Ion-strengthened glass over their screens that curves towards the edges. They also have an improved connectivity department with 20-band LTE support (maxing out at 150Mbps) and Wi-Fi ac support.

Apple has adjusted iOS 8, the next version that will ship with the iPhone 6, to take advantage of a larger screen. The familiar home screen will rotate appropriately in landscape orientation, something I imagine I will be doing regularly. I dislike phones that lock the home screen in portrait orientation when the phone is rotated into landscape. It's jarring and not very efficient.

The Camera department of Apple’s again seems to be lagging behind. The rivals like Sony and Nokia, have already matched and even outdone Apple in it. Sony has recently announced the Experia Z3 with a 20.7 megapixel (MP) camera, 4K video recording and image sensitivity equivalent to ISO 12,800, making low-light shooting cooler. Nokia's 41MP Lumia 1020 is also leading the way in Smartphone photo performance.

On the Apple’s side, the new iPhones still have 8MP cameras. But camera quality is about further than just megapixels. However comparing with the iPhone 5S, there is remarkable upgradation. Both iPhone models have a fresh sensor, quicker, more precise autofocus, and better image stabilization for sharper photos. They  also shoot creative slow motion video at up to 240 fps. The camera looks like a noteworthy renovation on the iPhone 5S.  The sensor upgrades, better tone mapping, improved noise reduction, and new "Focus Pixel" technology, which improves the phone's ability to select autofocus points. The front-facing camera has also been  upgraded, with an f/2.2 aperture that allows more light and new burst mode capabilities.

With Apple, beautiful design is always assumed. The major change was the release of two phones with different screen sizes. The current iPhone 5S has a 4-inch screen. The new iPhones have screen sizes of 4.7 inches and 5.5 inches, matching rivals at the top end of the smartphone market whose screens generally measure 5 inches or more.

The new models are also thinner than current iPhones. – the 6 is 6.9 mm thick and 129g, whereas the 6 Plus is 7.1mm and 172g, making them heavier than the iPhone 5. Apple has also returned to the rounded case backing of previous iPhones.

As far as the design is concerned, both phones more narrowly resemble the iPad and the iPod touch than the iPhone 5s. Both models have soft, rounded corners and a curved glass screen that mixes smoothly into the shrill metal body of the device. The volume buttons are now pill-shaped, and the power button is positioned on the right side of the device for easier one-handed use.

New iPhone screens are made of what Apple calls an “ion strengthened glass” screen. Both phones have an impressive new "Retina HD Display," with the iPhone 6 featuring a resolution of1334 x 750 (326 ppi) and the iPhone 6 Plus featuring a resolution of 1920 x 1080 (401 ppi).

Apple's upgraded operating system, iOS 8, has already been announced, and will be presented from September 17. The new operating system is free on iPhones from the 4S onwards. Among the innovative features are enhanced photo editing and HomeKit integration.

Secure mobile payments system

Mobile wallets, designed to replace credit and debit cards with tapping your smartphone to pay, are already getting common. Apple has s launched its own version , known as Apple Pay. It will be available from next month, initially in the US only. Both new iPhones have a Near Field Communications (NFC) antenna for making contactless payments, which shoppers validate using their iPhone's Touch ID fingerprint sensor.

Apple Pay can offer a safe and appropriate way to pay when we travel. Travel apps including Uber (for private hire cabs) and OpenTable (for restaurant bookings) have already publicized Apple Pay integration facilities. The payments system will also be functioning with the new Apple Watch.

The new iPhone 6 is an advancement on the 5S. Increase in raw battery capacity is also remarkable. To further it, the iPhones' faster A8 processor offers enhancements in power management. Apple data suggests the iPhone 6 will last 25 percent longer on 3G browsing than the iPhone 5S. Standby times are equal, however. he larger iPhone 6 Plus features a superior boost in battery life.

In comparison, HTC One (M8) has a 2,600 mAh battery and Sony's recently announced Experia Z3 will have an even bigger 3,100 mAh battery. These phones definitely outrun iPhone 6 in this aspect at least.

Colors and Price

Apple's new iPhones are available in Gold, Silver, and Space Gray, and are available in 16, 64, and 128 GB capacities. The iPhone 6 pricing starts at $199, while the iPhone 6 Plus pricing starts at $299.

Difference between Iphone 6 and Iphone 6 Plus

While both models contain the same 64-bit A8 chip and the same general design, there are some differences between the two phones. The iPhone 6 measures in at 6.9mm, while the iPhone 6 Plus is slightly denser at 7.1mm. Apple's iPhone 6 Plus also has three major discriminating features: optical image stabilization for the camera, and a longer battery life, and an iPad-style landscape mode that displays more content on the screen.
